Phil attended Washburn University in Topeka, where he majored in Political Science with a minor in History. After graduating in 1984, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he completed his paralegal certificate, specializing in litigation and taxation. He worked for various firms in Omaha for the next 10 years, before returning to the Kansas City area to be closer to family in 1999. Phil is single, although he would love to find a way to claim his cat as a dependent.
Phil enjoys cooking, baking, reading (science fiction), music (almost anything except rap), and Sporting KC.
After working as a paralegal for various firms around the Kansas City area, Phil began working for the Law Office of Gary Sloan in 2003. He also started working for H&R Block that same year, starting as a tax associate in the district office. Phil prepared taxes for clients of H&R Block from 2003 to 2015. In 2010, he earned his designation as an Enrolled Agent, and began additional tax work on client audit responses and defenses to the IRS and State taxing agencies.
Phil Root worked for Gary Sloan until Gary’s untimely death in 2014. Phil transitioned to the Law Offices of Robert Manske, where he worked as a paralegal concentrating on criminal defense cases. Phil then joined Higgins Law Group as a paralegal and Enrolled Agent. Today, Phil specializes in small business and individual tax cases, whether it is assisting a small business to set up and do tax planning, to preparing individual income taxes, defending against audits, or offers and compromise.
